glass coating for infrastructure projects

Exterior Glass Protection: REM Montreal, Canada

The Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Canada, featuring an extensive network of automated light rail lines across Montreal.

With over 44,000 sqm (≈ 473,000 ft²) of exterior glass used across stations and structures, maintaining clean, durable façade glass in harsh environmental conditions presents a significant long-term challenge.

EnduroShield was specified as a protective glass coating to improve performance, reduce maintenance, and protect large-scale exterior glass surfaces.

Spanning 67 kilometres of double track and 26 stations — most of which are above ground — the REM project incorporates over 44,000 sqm (≈ 473,000 ft²) of exterior façade glass protected with EnduroShield.

The glass was pre-treated in factory by our partners in the Middle East, White Aluminum in conjunction with APT, ensuring consistent application at scale across this $6.9 billion infrastructure development.

The global nature of the project is reflected in the collaboration between multiple international partners working together to deliver a long-term glass protection solution.

“The construction company did a test of two options out in the Canadian winter elements and chose EnduroShield for its superior performance. Projects of this size take several years, and we won this business back in 2019.” Adrian Ray, Director – Global Sales & Marketing, PCT Global LLC

Once completed, the REM will be the fourth largest automated transportation system in the world, operating as a fully electric and driverless network with projected annual ridership of 42.7 million passengers by 2032.

This project represents a new generation of large-scale light rail infrastructure, and forms part of a growing portfolio of global façade and transport projects where EnduroShield has been specified.

The Québec government has also approved a further 25-station expansion, including an additional 50,000 sqm of glass — where EnduroShield is expected to be specified again.

Why EnduroShield is Used on Large Infrastructure Projects

  • factory-applied (scalable)
  • reduces long-term cleaning costs
  • protects against environmental damage
  • suitable for large façade systems
EnduroShield is used globally on large-scale infrastructure, façade, and transportation projects where long-term glass performance and reduced maintenance are critical.
